rescued from a guys barn being cleared. He listed it for sale, I inquired about it just because it was unique and wanted to hear more about it-not really intending to buy. Well, no one was interested after a few days so he called and begged me to buy it because he didn't want to take it to the dump and couldn't bear to burn it. He said he used to do demolition work, and an owner told the workers to take what they wanted-over 30 years ago. He does not recall where, who, type of building etc. He lived and worked in NW Indiana, about 30 miles outside Chicago. It is very well made with attention to detail. The table and Century motor are not original to the saw. I cleaned it up a bit and she sure is pretty. I thought possibly a printers saw, but the Printmakers museum in LA says no. Maybe a bookmakers saw? It has green felt under the fence, and an alarm bell under the table that chimes when the table is lowered all the way, exposing the blade, and the fence comes close to blade. Ahlberg Bearing makers stamp. Interestingly, another handmade saw, featured in Popular Woodworking, has a design detail that is exactly the same; the shape of the block of wood that secures the hand crank. And I've also seen this same shape used in Ahlberg metal designs. OR...it might just be a coincidence and a popular design profile to use from the time (kinda like a humpback mantle clock in shape, quite Deco). I will attach a pic of this other saw just to get your wheels turning and add mystique : )
