This saw was in my grandfather's workshop from about 1962 until my father and I cleaned out the shop in late 2017 when my grandmother moved into a nursing home. My grandfather died in about 1991 and the shop sat idle until then.

Like many men of his generation, my grandfather was an all-round handyman. He fixed home appliances and cars and lawnmowers, he did his own home improvements, and he built small pieces of furniture for both indoor and outdoor use. This saw was the centerpiece of his shop. Sitting on its base with waste collection and tool storage, the always-full container of sawdust was a testament to how frequently the saw was used.

To my child's eyes this saw was the paragon of tablesaws. My adult eyes were surprised at all the cost-based design compromises. Which is a reminder that good craftsmanship can happen even with modest tools.

I have a fully equipped shop, complete with jointer and planer. My grandfather always wanted those machines but never had the money for them. I think of him often when I use mine.
