I am posting these photos on behalf of the owner, Ricardo Castillo of Costa Rica. This is the Junior Lathe, which was introduced about 1920 and continued until about the late 1930s. It was their first 9-inch lathe and was succeeded by the Series O and Workshop 9-inch lathes. The Junior was based on the larger and more expensive 10-inch model, and some parts are the same, or nearly the same, across both sizes. The headstock spindle hole is line-bored, lined with phosphor bronze bushings, and then precision lapped. The Junior was not much cheaper to manufacture than its 10-inch brother. The later models of 9-inch South Bend lathes were re-engineered to reduce manufacturing costs.
Ricardo provided us with a pair of high-resolution photos, a front view of the lathe and a close-up of the serial number. I have extracted some detail shots from the front view.
