Comments:
I purchased this Wysong & Miles oscillating spindle sander (OSS) via an IRS Auctions sale for Barbary Industries on June 25, 2014. The OSS was grossly mis-characterized as a complete working machine. It was anything but ~ the spindle shaft was raw 'shaft' material with minimal machining, the lower oscillation housing cover was hacked to accommodate the incorrect shaft, the worm was missing, the motor was 3600 RPM's instead of the correct 1750 RPM's. The 'shaft' was hollowed out and was just slipped over the motor shaft ~ no Love-Joy connection. The one supplied sanding drum was actually a boat trailer roller.

A search for the correct parts was fruitless and the sander sat in a corner of my garage until late 2017. I actually was going to cut my losses a couple of times and scrap the sander (I even had it loaded in my trailer destined for a local metal recycler once). But I decided to persevere and in February 2017 an eBay listing showed a possible donor from a Wysong & Miles model 309 ~ a combination machine with a 26 or 30 inch disc and OSS. I placed a bid through a bid service because I was out of town at bid closing, but my bid didn't go through. It didn't sell, so I contacted the seller and asked if he was relisting. He said I was the only one following the auction and if I wanted it, come and get it. His pipe organ business had bought the 309 but only wanted the disc sander because they had other OSS sanders.

So using the donor and my OSS, I restored the Wysong & Miles to it's former glory. Some variations due to the donor include a 3/4 HP motor versus the standard 1/2 HP. The standard 306 shaft was 3/4 inch, so I had a machinist friend turn the 309 1" shaft down to 3/4". The standard 306 would only accept 6 inch in length spindles, but the 309 used 9 inch spindles ~ I kept the 9" shaft length. I never was a fan of the 'puke' green on most Wysong & Miles machinery so I painted the OSS a PPG Vista green.

This machine has been previously listed on this site by another member - Mike Mantel. It has also been sold on the IRS Auction site at least 3 times!

Restored: 2018.
