This planer was purchased in January 2017 from an individual in my neighborhood of Pecan Plantation, Texas. He purchased it new in 1976, using it relatively lightly until the 2000's. In the 2010's he developed Parkinson's and was unable to continue woodworking. The main goal for the planer was to replace the cutter head bearings, including installing a new spiral segmented cutter head, and put it on a mobile base. I did end up cleaning and repainting most surfaces, and used a 50/50 solution of muriatic acid and water to remove rust (very effective).
Of special note is the worm gear box for the feed rollers. The original 600 weight oil, while available, is a non-additive product meant for brass gearing. I would not recommend it because it will congeal after time (as it did on this machine). Instead, I used Amsoil full synthetic SAE 250 weight.
I was hoping to post a PDF file here of the restoration effort, but it appears you cannot do that. I will try posting it on OWWM in the near future.
Thanks - Paul
