Will provide more photos of self contained chain drive in separate posting on this site:

just acquired lathe this very very very well preserved all original 9" (junior) Southbend metal lathe off of an on line sellers list. Has a 36" bed. This lathe comes with the very rare and totally complete and functioning overhead self contained ("Silent" CHAIN) drive unit. According to a great lathe site in England, this overhead unit more than doubled the cost of the lathe when purchased in the late 1920's and 30's. I believe this lathe was made in 1927. This lathe is a Rolls Royce of lathes. It has Phosphor bronze bushings in the spindle and overall precisely machine made by hand. This lathe has all original paint and finishes. This South Bend Lathe has never seen production usage. The lathe pictured below is uncleaned and as found. This lathe is powered by its original large 1/4 HP Westinghouse motor, and the very cool well oversized Westinghouse forward and reverse switch. Also has the, ( almost always missing ) four original brass dobbers for oiling, two on the tail stock, and two in the apron. All aspects of the mechanicals of this lathe are absolutely smooth and tight with zero play what so ever: The story: The great grandson was clearing out his parents estate in Palatine Illinois. He was the third generation owner, but no longer had time for it. He had many stories to share, remembering time that his dad and his grandfather had worked on some projects together. His relatives were engineers and teachers and he stated that this lathe was the families pride and joy. This is obvious to me, as the lathe is in impeccable condition. Has all the original black japanning and white interior bed color as well. I will be leaving the lathe as is...you never see original condition machines in this condition. I have two other lathes which I will be selling. This lathe di not come with much extra tooling. Just a dead center, and a three jaw chuck, lantern with cutter.
