The machine was used in a furniture factory in Grand Rapids until the mid-90's. Upon closure, it passed through two people on its way to me in an Ebay auction for $46.50. The machine had been upgraded from babbitt to ball bearings and guards added. There are no mounting plates for a motor so I assume it was originally a line shaft drive; the triple-v pulley is not original. Also added with the guards was the dust collection, dual 4" ports.
A previous owner had removed the guides and the motor. I have a 3Hp single phase motor for it and will be ordering Carter guides. As this BARELY fit into my garage and is too big for my shop, restoration will wait for warmer weather. Should be quite the machine when I get it done.
BTW, from manufacturer's histories, West Side Iron Works was selling bandsaws under the American Machinery Company label in 1902, out of Grand Rapids, MI. The company changed names in 1903 to "The Oliver Machinery Co." to avoid confusion with American Wood Working Machinery Co. of Rochester, NY. I'll be looking for other clues as to manufacturing dates as I start restoration.
