Comments:
This grindstone was in the factory of the Goodall Knife co. in Antrim NH. The base has a mounting axle and guide slot for the treadle which it was originally fitted with. At some point it was motorized. When I got it the big pulley was in place but the rest of the motor drive was missing. I mounted the whole machine on skids and added a motor mount which includes a countershaft so that I could run the wheel at an appropriately slow speed. Suprisingly enough, considering the weight of the wheel, the babbitt bearings were in good shape.

I recently acquired a copy of catalogue #30 from the Athol Machine Works. In it this grinder is listed as # 156. The plate shows the treadle as well as the flat belt pulley for running it from a lineshaft. Apparently the grindstones were sold separately. The Athol Machine Works was founded in 1868. Assuming a catalogue per year, that makes this the 1898 catalogue.
