Found on local Craigslist. PO never used it. He picked up from a machine shop several years ago. I found it to be complete with no damage and it looks to have been used very little. I was looking for a vertical milling head for my Brown and Sharpe Universal 2A milling machine (also listed on this site) and I did find a B&S # 22 heavy duty head but it, like the mill, used the large NMTB 50 tooling, had max speed of around 1500 RPM, and did not have a quill feed. I was hoping to find a more nimble vertical head that used smaller tooling with higher speeds and had a quill feed. The Fray met these requirements. It came equipped with a 3 phase 1/2 HP motor with forward/reverse switch and has 6 speeds that are changed with belt and stepped pulleys (a back gear option was offered but was not furnished with my head). I lucked out as the over arm adapter is bored to the correct diameter to fit the arbor supports of my mill without modification. The spindle accepts B&S #7 tooling with a 1/2" max collet capacity . I have been able to purchase some of the hard to find #7 tooling including a few sets of collets, a couple end mill holders and a boring head. All the tooling was domestic/vintage and in good shape-some import B&S #7 tooling is still offered but its quality is often questioned and I steered clear of it. From the above stats the head is comparable to the older Bridgeport M heads. Like the M head, the Fray is limited to lighter duty work but this is fine for me as the heavy duty jobs will be designated to the B&S #22 head and/or the horizontal capabilities of the mill.
