Yates American M-40 hollow chisel mortiser. Original 2hp 3-phase straight 440 volt motor which runs at actual 3550 rpm close to original specification. Depth of cut is 3-1/2" with 12" clearance under the chisel, handling material up to 5-1/2" width. Chisels ( up to 3/4"+) powered by spline drive system with threaded depth and throw stops. Side to side table stops. Recent addition pneumatic clamp - and unfortunately the original is long gone. Blower to remove chips. Extendable foot pedal for extra leverage and pedal retracts to keep out of way. Purchased from Chris Kunnen who purchased from Dave Kuns. Dave Kuns in turn had purchased from Don Britt in Isola, Kansas back in the mid-1990s. Kunen had suggested it had been purchased originally by Boeing, which is possible since Boeing Wichita, with groundbreaking in June 1941 was in partial operation one year later in June 1942. I have no paperwork, but according to the S/N Registry here ... that would make it a 1943 machine which might dovetail nicely with the startup of that Wichita facility a few hours west of Isola. The mortiser works great ... gets regular use. It looks identical to the K-25 machines I see listed elsewhere.
