This saw was photographed when I visited White's Woodworking Shop, near Wilmington Delaware. This was a patternmaker's shop established in 1916. I had gone up to see a combination machine and a large lathe which had previously been discussed on the OWWM site. The present owners are Nancy and Hank Hassiepen. The business had been owned by Nancy's father from 1946 until his death last year. All of the equipement present was well used but well cared for. This TS was no exception. Mr. White had made custom side boards to fill the gaps in the cabinet - these were removed for photography. It was not for sale a the time of my visit.
This saw was apparently sold under the Oliver name as well. The brass tilt gauge on the front of the saw displays the stamped # 8-575, which I take to be the serial No. The arbor is 1/2" and the saw will take up to an 8" blade. It has a GE Repulsion induction motor with an integral gear driven arbor. The fence and miter gauges (there were two) have an unusual design and ride on rails which are part of the base casting. The top is steel plate.
Like all Wallace machines I have had the pleasure to inspect closely, this one showed fine castings and an unusual, but servicable, design. Limited to three photos, I did not post the close-up of the miter gauge, but it really shows the quality of the finish. Of course the saw fired up very nicely. The shop is full of "soap box derby" racers, which was a family tradition and remains an interest of the owners. It is possible this saw built more of them than any other.
