This is a rare Craftsman label (Walker-Turner built) "Retractable Table Saw with Tilting Arbor". Sears had this item listed in their 1935 and 1936 catalogs. Walker-Turner sold this machine through their own catalogs under their "Driver Line" label in those same years. I haven't noticed any difference between those years, or between the Sears Craftsman and Walker-Turner 'Driver Line' versions other than color and badges.
The saw was designed to be inserted into a workbench top, as a great space saver. When the saw was not needed it could be fully retracted so that the entire workbench surface would be available to be used as a workbench. As you can see from the photos below the saw does retract fully, and when raised fully has an impressive depth of cut.
The saw is listed as a "tilting arbor" saw, but that is debatable. The tilt function is accomplished by tilting the entire saw unit while the "table" (which is affixed to the underside of the bench surface) stays horizontal. (Of course if you took any tilt-table saw and mounted the table to the underside of a bench so it was fixed, you'd get this same result when you operated the tilt function.) The saw is supposed to have a counter weight to assist with holding the saw in position when the blade is tilted. My saw is missing that counterweight.
The saw could be purchased as just the saw unit, to be built into your own bench; or you could buy it with their bench. This bench and leg set is factory issue. I am missing the miter gauge, blade guard and rip fence which would have shipped with this unit.
