This very rare "Double Spindle Drill Press" was a Craigslist find which caught me off guard as I wasn't aware that any such setup existed. After doing some research I found these in the 1939 WT catalog, but not in any before or after. The unit I bought had both a 1939 and a 1940 head on it, which likely means that it wasn't assembled and sold until sometime in 1940.
The main thing of interest here, and what is unique and rare, is the base. (The heads are nice, but we've seen these before.) Per the catalog notes, that base section weighs 260 pounds by itself. Having had to move it, I don't doubt that. It's nearly solid.
The heavy solid bench mount production cast iron base as seen here, which came in single and double spindle widths, was apparently introduced in 1939 and unique to that catalog year. In the 1938 catalog there are no 'gang' or production DP setups listed. By the time of the 1940 catalog WT had evolved this product area and had switched to the more common gang production table setup which included a cast iron leg set and a cast iron production table top (which came in various lengths and could be drilled in different configurations depending on how many heads the customer wanted to mount on it).
The base is in storage at this time, but I'll add more photos as soon as I can move it into the shop.
