I bought this interesting old lathe today. It's a 14 inch F.E. Reed made in Worcester Mass around 1903. I'm told it was installed in a Worcester Woolen mill and later sold to the University of New Hampshire and was given to a retiring teacher ... the last few years it's been making parts for custom motorcycles.
It seems to be in good condition with nothing broken or bastardized. It has no gearing for threading, but it does have a three step drive system for lateral as well as cross slide movement. It has no dials! It also has no compound. The cross slide pivots at the front so the tool bit can be raised or lowered by turning the screw at the rear of the slide. It came with two large 4 jaw chucks one can switch to a scroll movement where all four jaws move at the same time. The other 4 jaw has slots so it looks like it can double as a drive plate.
The motor stand and belt mechanism is well made but not fancy.
On the lathe bed it's stamped PAT'D Sept 4 1888 and under that 2766
