This saw followed me home from Don Petersons iron Valhalla near Tacoma, WA. I have been looking for one of these for a long time. A call to Sarah at Yates American resulted in a build sheet for the saw. It was ordered by the War Department Air Corp in February 1941 and delivered June 6, 1941 to Wright field in Dayton, Ohio. I would love to know some of the projects this saw was used on. Eventually the saw was excessed and found it way to Seattle and was used in Seattle's adult education division of the Seattle public schools. This saw has a couple unusual features. First is the upper guard is cast iron not aluminum like all the others I have seen. I had heard that the aluminum was replaced with cast iron during the war as it was in short supply. This saw though was made at least 6 months before the war started so I'm not sure that is the case. Second it has a longer guide post and tension screw than standard so it can get greater distance under the guide. With the longer blades it looks like one can get about 26" under the guide. I'm not sure why one would want 26" but somebody needed it I guess. I have just about gotten the restoration complete as of Nov. 1,2005. I am only working out some wheel issues and will be posting further pictures and reporting on the saws performance soon.
