This planer is the first one ever made by Baxter D. Whitney. Chandler W. Jones book, "Planers, Matchers and Molders in America" says that this is the first "rotary surface planer", and it was invented in 1837 and brought to the market in 1846. I am not sure how Whitney's machine is thus distinguished from the admittedly cruder planers and planer-matchers made by Woodworth and others.
