I think this is the first Comet-co-badged Davis and Wells machine where the serial number has been found. It appears across the top of the large aluminum tag affixed to the front of the machine in the upper right. The alphanumeric code is stamped but with small letters and not very obviously. The code is almost certainly made up of the year (first two digits), followed I suspect by number corresponding to the __th machine built in that year (second set of digits) and, finally, the machine type code (JT for JoinTer, SP for ShaPer, BM for Boring Machine, etc.) This shaper also features the unmolested original 1" spindle and a 2hp GE Tri-Clad motor.
