Here is an example of the 20" Rockwell Series 2000 variable speed drill presses from the 1970s. While this is the slow-speed model designed primarily for metalworking, it is essentially similar in appearace, head-wise, to the nine or so 20" VS models offered at the time for use in metal, wood, or other materials. The speed-range of this particular DP is 125-1250 rpm, but speed ranges of 200-2000 and 375-3750 rpm were also available.

The Rockwell VS drill presses of this era were notorious for being noisy and for having speed-control issues as, similar to other Rockwell tools of '70s-vintage, they suffered from use of inferior materials and poor quality-control. The DP pictured required three replacments of parts while under warranty--all for the speed control. It was subsequently modified slightly inside and out with non-factory-approved adjustments (see pic #2) and is still in service, albeit still rather noisy and cranky in use, but not nearly as bad as delivered. Except for the speed control issues, they are VERY strong drill presses.
