For years I had been looking for a spindle sander, and in particular, a Max. I did not want to buy an imported one and almost did, but one morning I was looking on CL and I saw an add that was labeled with the brand of the magnetic switch and not the machine itself. The pictures were of the Max sander but the title and the name where not. The price was $500.00 I called the number just to make sure the sander was for sale since the machine was next to LAX and 200 miles away. After confirming that it was for sale, I got in my Honda Fit (my pick up truck was out of service at the time) and drove away as fast as I could. The whole time I was thinking someone is going to say "we made a mistake about the price" or "it's gone!" When I got there I drove around the back of the 4k sf or so studio. A young man came to the door and I told him who I was and that I was here to buy the sander. He said "sure follow me to the back". They were actually a prototype shop and not a woodworking shop, it is always good when you know that you are buying something from someone who did not use the machine in an actual production set-up. When he opened the door to their shop there she was, looking so beautiful as if all the years had only made her look even better! Then I knew that I had found what I had been looking for at a bargain price. Two plates where included and almost all the spindles intact. Boxes of sanding paper as well. I didn't even want to turn the power on, I didn't want to waste any more time especially after I saw the condition the sander was in and that it had the optional blower with the original dust bag! So after talking price a little I started to roll it to the roll up door when he offered to go look for a dolly. I said sure but when he came back I was already getting ready to put it in the back of the Fit. He thought it was never going to fit in there, little did he know of my determination to take this machine even if it was on top of my hood. One month after I had it in my shop he called and told me that he had found one of the missing throat plates! I know is crazy but I got back in my car and drove 200 miles to pick it up. I have seen them for sale for up to $105.00. I did very little cleaning after picking it up.
