This lathe was purchased many years ago at auction of the Bucks Funiture manufacturing plant (no longer in business) in Clinton, MA. James Buck Sr. founded the Co. in 1923 as a chairmaking business in Sterling, MA. The lathe features a cast iron bed painted in dark blue green with hand painted black rectangle motifs. Small cast Doric columns decorate the bed. The headstock is cast iron with laminated wood flat belt pulleys held together with screws. The tailstock is cast iron with some brass fittings and features a small handwheel to lock the position of the tail center. The tail center spindle allows a full 5 of adjustment without moving the tailstock. There may have been a treadle at one time. The lathe has a max. of 48 between centers and a 12 swing. Information from a book on early lathe makers and the Worcester Historical Museum identifies this hand lathe as one manufactured by Lucius W. Pond in Worcester, MA.
