When I found this lathe it was bolted to the wall in an old barn in Hillsboro, NH. It had 4" X 8" pine beams for the bed and could turn 9 feet between centers. I used it that way with its original flat belt drive for many years. When I moved into my new shop in 1998, I made a new bed for it from some oak planks I had. This allowed it to sit on the floor, but shortened the bed somewhat.

Although I know nothing about the Claypool machine co., this is a typical 19th century lathe with babbitt bearing headstock. It is modern enough to have morse taper spindles and standard threads for the faceplate.

I converted the drive so that now the motor is mounted behind the spindle and drives it with a v belt on a variable pitch pulley. The motor is hinged to allow the pulley to work, with the takeup controlled by a turnbuckle. The motor can slide along a rail, allowing the belt to run on any of the three steps of the headstock pulley.
