Comments:
I had already listed this band saw as manufactured by C.D. SMITH of BALDWINVILLE MASS because it is marked as such and patented JAN 6TH 1868. Jeff Joslin ran a patent check and came up empty handed leading him to conclude that it was a fictitious patent intended to scare would be design thieves. The following engraving is clearly of this saw, accurate to the smallest of detail.
The wheels appeared to be at least 36 inches in diameter but I did not have a tape measure to confirm this. Note their rounded bicycle tire like profile. Also note the rigid "triangular" frame construction which supports the upper wheel and blade guide.
This machine among others are on display in a water powered grist mill in Weston Vermont. The collection includes a Vermont made wood lathe, a "Fay" foot operated mortising machine made in Keene NH, a Massachusetts patent wood frame band saw, a Lane shingle machine, an up and down saw mill, a mechanical reciprocating cordwood saw, a large collection of tinsmithing tools, early carding machinery, and two turbines made in Claremont NH. At this time all machinery is on static display. Work is underway to restore one of the turbines.
