I just bought this on ebay, still haven't picked it up yet. I've been looking for one of these, close enough to pick up, for a long time. All that ebay lurking paid off, and my time finally arrived.
Serial no. 13909, I have it pegged between 1905 and 1910. The 4 spoke lock wheels make it later that 1904 and the lack of blade guard holes make it earlier than 1910. I think the old Crescent jointers are the most elegant looking of the big jointers (no offence to others, just a personal preference) because of the flared base and feet.
I'm very happy with the original round safety head with babbitt bearings, I would have replaced a square head if it had come with one. The three-phase motor is my only problem, but I think I have a 5hp single phase to run it for now. I will be looking for a VFD to use with the original motor as the final solution.
It definitely wasn't a "you suck", not even a bottom feeder price, but not bad for a working machine with no immediate need for repair or refurbish. I would have paid lots more for a new chiwanese 8", so I'm pretty happy with it. Its enough jointer to last me for my lifetime (famous last words).
