The Whitney S-970 is Newman-Whitney's biggest and baddest double planer from the old Baxter Whitney line.
It's the next progression from the Whitney 97, which succeeded the 24.
This unit lived most of it's life in the Pulaski Furniture Plant, Dublin, VA.
It was used for planing panels after glue up for furniture sides, tops, etc.
We bought it from Pulaski in 2000, for $15,000, right when the price of doubles was going through the floor.
Sutton, the exclusive NC dealer for Newman-Whitney, sold it to Pulaski new in about 1968 or so.
We had Sutton go through the machine before bringing it out of the south.
It ran in our mill for maybe eight years before being replaced with an S-282.
Had the Newman Quiet Cut Helical head, the only way to fly.
It was retired, stored, and eventually wholesaled to a dealer in 2014 for $12,000.
Good examples of these machines still bring $10,000 - $25,000
