This S-480 came out of the same old filthy dry kiln storage building at Bridgewater Furniture that the 36" Porter 715 Facer came from.
It was in equally good condition, having been well maintained and properly operated in this small, well managed factory.
Ethen Allen bought them out, as they did with many small furniture plants.
When they closed in 2005, Ethen Allen sent the work to China.
We saw much more of the Furniture exodus from this country than most, going in and out of factories for years as they closed down.
It can be noted in the pictures that the infeed table was of recent fabrication as this planer did not originally come with an infeed table.
Rick Foreman, master machine man, easily fabricated one for it's pending transfer to a guy in OH who got a damn good deal at only $2,000.
Oh well, so anyway...
These planers were often sold without an infeed table for conveyor belt feeding.
One can plainly see the upper, Whitney added, dead roll in several pictures.
This laid over the infeed belt conveyor from the facer, a Porter unit in this case.
The roll had a limit switch to stop the feed in the event of over-thickness boards.
One could still take a good 1/4" off with minimal protest from these great planers.

Comments:
Note that this machine has the Direct Motor Drive, not a coupled motor, but a single cutterhead/motor arbor unit. The best machines are the ones with the coupled motors
