Diehl built the 660 (and the prior 66) as a self-feed jointing machine.
There is a center vertical endless chain that pulls stock across a head.
The feed man sends the board over one head, one way, then the tail man sends the board across the second head, fed the other way, back to the feed man.
Get it?
These machines do not make a parallel board, the joint is referenced off the feed table.
The primary use was for running a "glue-joint" on edges of boards.
The heads would have a center match, tapered Vee shape - tongue and groove, that locks the boards together and provides a straight glue joint match.
This is a big help in gluing operations in the absence of "glue joint quality" straight line rip saws.
