This motor was formerly in use at the Kalb Shoe Company of Rochester NY. The father of a friend of the VintageMachinery website had brought this home from Kalb Shoe many years ago where he had worked to save the motor from being scrapped. To the best of our knowledge it has not been put to use since being taken out of service at Kalb.
The motor is probably D.C., based on the similarity of its build to the motor shown in the 1989 article with photo shown in the "Images" area for this manufacturer.
"The Rochester Electric Motor Company. of Rochester, N. Y., to meet the growing demand for their direct current motors and generators have moved to larger quarters . . . .
All their machines embody the following commendable features: Interchangeable field coils, field magnets in one piece, sectional wound armatures, allowing the removal and replacement of single coils in case of accident, self oiling bearings, a combined carbon and copper gauze brush, and heavy insulation of the best quality. Mechanical lock starting boxes of their own design are furnished with their motors. The regular machines are built for 110, 220 and 500 volts and the speeds for the machines are 1,200 revolutions for the % to 5 h. p., 900 for the 6 to 8 h. p., 850 for the 12 to 20h. p., and 500 for the 25 h. p. "
