I acquired this tool with the help of two fine gentleman and OWWM locals - Todd and Andrew. Todd spotted it and Andrew payed/picked it up for me. Quite the enablers!
In any case, this a very rare and special tool. Not only is it in the rare 101.0218x series of Atlas-made floor saws, but it is the first example of the 101.02182 version, which has a wider and deeper sheetmetal cabinet than its 02180 counterpart. Therefore, this saw was technically never featured in the Craftsman catalogs, although it's smaller cabinet sibling was. These saws only lasted from 1940-1941 before they were dropped from the Craftsman line. One could speculate as to why they were discontinued - price/desirability? Metal shortage once the war started? I would think that by the time Craftsman had sorted out the 1942 catalog in '41 there would have been no knowledge of the war's impact on the industry. In any case, this saw is quite a treat to have and a treasure to own. My plan is a full restoration. I will need 1 side extension (one is homemade and not flat to table), at least 1 new handwheel or handwheel knobs at least, a period-correct motor, splitter, non-damaged miter gauge, and either a new motor mount or a repair to this one which is cracked. The fence has a broken zamak casting and will need replacement. It will need an access door and the rear dust door fabricated.
Andrew stated that the gentleman he got this saw from said that his grandfather purchased it new. The was was still cutting oak at the time it was sold.
