These photos came with a request to identify the maker. The owner believes that it may be Shaker-made.

The pictures show a solid-chisel mortiser, foot operated, with an iron/steel leaf spring for the counter-balance and return. It looks like the cutter assembly has been lowered a couple of feet below its normal operating position—obviously it should be above the table, not below.
