Comments:
This came to me installed in a Yates-American J-Line J170 wood lathe with oval support columns. It appears to be the lathe's original motor. The date of lathe and motor is uncertain, but were likely manufactured shortly before introduction of new square-column J170 model for the 1958-9 season (cf. http://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/detail.aspx?id=4701). Motor badge states "MANUFACTURED ESPECIALLY FOR YATES-AMERICAN MACHINE CO....(by)...THE PEERLESS ELECTRIC CO..."

The motor has grease plugs on both ends, along with grease in the end bells, and include a decal and printing on the badge that states "THIS MOTOR IS LUBRICATED FOR 5000 HOURS OF NORMAL OPERATION." The bearings, however, were shielded 2 sides (MRC 205 SFF; 6205 size). I'd guess the original bearings were open one side, otherwise the grease plugs and grease in the end bell would have served no purpose. In this scenario, the shielded MRC bearings would seem to be later replacements.

I tested the motor with a VFD, and it runs fine. The bearings squeak above ~1200 rpm, and will be replaced. I intend to use this motor on the lathe with which it was originally purchased, using a VFD in combination with the Reeves drive.
