Comments:
Just picked this up yesterday from a machine shop that was discarding several industrial tools, including lathes and drill presses. A fellow OWWMer informed several of us of the large haul and it was 'all hands on deck' to save the machines from the scrapyard. When I saw this drill press base, I immediately recognized it from the 1943 Craftsman catalog. While it still may be uncertain as to whether this exact tool was badged as either an Atlas (actual maker) or a Craftsman, the Atlas Press Co catalogs from this time period show a separate, different design for their multiple spindle drill press units, indicating that the tool is most likely a Craftsman, as it is not found in any Atlas literature I have seen. I have to assume that this model was only intended for the 'Craftsman' line.

The base has a top and two sides, all cast iron. The sides are held on by 3 large bolts underneath. The wood stabilizer underneath was missing, as well as the two 15" Craftsman drill press heads. It does, however, have both columns and head raising lead screw attachments. Save for the wood table, all of the one-of-a-kind parts are accounted for and should make for a pretty straightforward restoration. I hope to restore this very rare and valuable drill press unit to original catalog specs. If you have a lead on some mid-1940's Craftsman 15" press heads, feel free to contact me!

Thanks! And thanks Todd for the email!
