Comments:
I bought this machine from OWWM'er Jeff Singleton on 3/25/05. It is a 227-BM, meaning it has a compound table (moves left-right, up-down, and in-out) as well as tilting 45 degrees either direction (B) and has a motorized head and feed (M). The head motor is a 4 hp direct drive with oiled ball bearings, while the feed is a 2 hp belt drive. Both motors are 3 phase General Electrics. The machine was in pretty good shape overall when purchase. Since then I've stripped the 4 layers of paint (3 green and one gray) and repainting the whole thing. A previous owner lost the front table clamp, and some barbarian cut away the slow-feed part of the feed motor's triple belt pulley, so there are only two feed speeds now. The feed clutch, when not engaged, gives a peculiar random ding-dinging sound from the clutch plates brushing up against each other. This type of clutch was pretty new in 1928--the Illinois Railroad Museum 227 (circa 1925) on this site uses belt tightening mechanism to start and stop the feed.
