Oliver # 381-D Single Spindle Sander 1957 vintage.
Aloha,
I Found this machine because I was looking for a jointer. So many times it happens that way. That is how I got my lathe because I was looking for a band saw. This sort of thing happens to me often and I am sort of used to it now. I got this machine as part of a package deal with my #12 jointer. This is one of my best traveled machines as it came from upstate New York and I am in Maui. I think that is about 5500 miles, give or take. The seller told me his dad bought the sander and jointer new from Oliver and would not separate the 2 machines. He told me these 2 were in the "model shop". It must have been a killer model shop to have this sander and a 20" 10 HP jointer among other things.
The only apology on this machine is that is was an awful color of green and the only thing I did to this one was restore the color to it's rightful Oliver green. At the time I did not realize what an awesome sander this is and the huge blessing it was to have all the accessories that it has. I guess I was just focusing on jointer at the time, but every time I use this one I like it better and better. It has 4 table rings and a ton of rubber drums each with it's own spindle from 6 x 9 on down to the little guys. I guess dad did not like to change the drums to one spindle. It is nice to be able to just screw in a different size without changing drums and spindles around. It has the wrenches and a cabinet full of sleeves came with it. I won't have to buy sleeves for a long, long time. An interesting thing about this sander is that it came with some sleeves that I have never seen before. The 4 sleeves look like brass and it looks like they are diamond coated. No one I have talked to about this has ever seen anything like these. I am not totally sure that they are diamond but I have used them on metal and they cut like crazy. Might be carbide?
It has the 2 speed 440 volt motor 1800/ 3600 RPM and dust hood under the table. The titling feature and oscillation are awesome. This is the one to have!
Aloha,
Chuck
