Bought as part of a lot from the GSA. Machine was most recently located at a Agriculture Department facility located on the grounds of what once was a major Naval Ammunition Depot just outside my hometown of Hastings, NE. There is documentation with the machine that indicates it had previously been used at an Army munitions facility in the neighboring town of Grand Island before finding it's way to the Navy's side. The Service Manual included with the machine was from Crescent Rockwell and dated as received at the Cornhusker Ordinance Plant in Grand Island, NE on August 25th, 1949. I'm guessing the munitions facility lineage accounts for the explosion proof enclosure for the manual starter on the front of the machine.
The serial number indicates it came off the line only one before another 12" jointer in the photo index that is coincidently also coupled direct drive (http://vintagemachinery.org/photoindex/detail.aspx?id=849). The other jointer also has the extended shaft on the fence adjustment worm gear. When I came across this machine I had the feeling that was a later owner mod but now it appears to have been a factory modification. It is equipped if the standard style Crescent gibbed head with four knives. The GI issue green paint is flaking off readily.
Quite possibly the most tippy machine I've come across yet. As far as the coupled motor hangs off the rear and the relatively narrow footprint of the Crescent jointers puts the balance point of this machine further back than comfort would allow.

The motor shelf is a bolt on factory piece. It hangs the motor way back there. The round cylinder shown attached to the motor shelf had a copy of the original service manual rolled up in it.
