This beautiful machine is from the era when wooden machines were gradually being replaced by cast iron. This is a transitional machine, half cast iron/half wood, probably from the 1870s. It can be seen in the Sutherland Steam Sawmill in Nova Scotia, one of the Nova Scotia Provincial Museums.

Dig the original paint; red cast iron hearts on green background. Looks like folk art to me.
