This is another trimmer that belongs to my friend in Indiana. Fox started production of his trimmers late in 1885. Like the other very early Fox machines, this one has "finger" type blade guards, which are attached to the knife carriage. In the early 1890's, Fox introduced an improved movel which replaced the "finger" guards with the "elephant ear" type guards which are attached to the posts, much like those on a Lion Trimmer.
Fox made this earlier type machine in three different sizes, with two, four, or six inch cutting heights. Starting with the newer type, they were assigned model numbers to indicate their cutting height, and the "revision" of the design. So the newer designs, introduced in the early 1890's, are known as the 2A, 4A, and 6A, with the "A" indicating the first revision to the original design. The ones made in the 1880's don't show any model number at all, but I call them the No. 2, No. 4, and No. 6.
Fox eventually added even more revised designs - up through the letter "G" -, although not all revisions were made in each size. At any rate, the No. 2, and subsequently the 2A were made for a number of years. They must not have been very popular, as this is the only one I've ever heard of in the 2-inch size. It's amazingly small, and will literally fit in the palm of your hand.
If anybody else knows of any other Fox No. 2's or 2A's, I'd sure like to add them to my registry of trimmers. Many thanks, Jeff McVey, Boise, Idaho.
