This sander was acquired from another member some years ago, and Bill Richardson was kind enough to offer me the run of his more complete sander to make new castings for a few key parts. This sander appears in the 1931 Porter Cable catalog; it is unknown if it originated with the Syracuse sander company ( as the B-3 descended from their B-1 sander). This fellow was originally in the US Navy, as evidenced by the USN decal on the pedestal and the legend'" USN PROPERTY NORD F 1090 IH A55-3-1" stamped ( rather crookedly) into the motor housing. A55-3-1 is probably not a date,as the latest year of production for the B-9 I'm aware of is April of 1945.
This sander would have originally come with a belt driven dust collector/lower drum cover that had a space for the serial number; unfortunately it is long gone , and would have been cost prohibitive to reproduce without the original cores. I intend to make a simple dust port in a similar style and have it cast.
It may not be Haze gray, but the sander is definitely underway once more.
