This came to me as the end of a long quest. I haven't purchased many single owner machines from the original owner, but in this case, it was a genuine honor. From a machine condition standpoint, I think this was very close to a best case scenario. Machine was kept clean, well maintained, not abused, stored in climate controlled shop, and not used nearly enough to wear anything out. When the quest started, I didn't even know what a Davis and Wells saw was. There was just a large band saw listed for sale about 100 miles away for $120. That was in 2010 or so. By the time I figured out what the saw was and learned some of the great features of this saw, somebody else was getting it. At that point I had no way to move it anyway. And I think it was pretty beaten up. They had offered to load it by lifting the table with a forklift, so I didn't think it had been treated too well. The next opportunity came a couple of years ago. One barely identifiable picture of what was probably my dream saw in the ad, 40's or 50's version, no mention of Davis and Wells but I knew what it was. I didn't have the money, but somebody did and it sold fast.

This one came along, and even though I could tell from the seller's picture that it was the newer version, it looked like it was in really great shape. I was the second caller. First caller was going out of town and would contact the seller "Monday or Tuesday." Tuesday night at 5:15 the seller called me and said "That other person didn't contact me when they said they would, so it is yours if you still want it." I had to admire his sense of fairness to strangers along with his no nonsense approach to honoring his side of things.

The saw is mostly light gray with a black speckle paint treatment. On the plus size, it has a brake, 2 hp single phase Baldor motor, fence and rail, excellent tires, smooth and silent bearings, mobile base, complete original guides, Furnas magnetic starter, dirty paper parts list, and a few spare blades. The only downsides are that it has the Rankin Brothers sheet metal enclosure and aluminum wheel covers. I may need to modify the blade guard to get full resaw, but I am not sure.
