Comments:
This grinder spent many years in our pattern shop grinding chisels, plane irons, and the like. It was retired from service and left to rust in a corner when the shop closed. I rescued it and proceeded to restore it. In the process, finding that the original open ball bearings, which used zerk-fittings for lubrication, along with inner and outer leather grease seals, had been replaced with sealed bearings (according to a service tag in 1950). The inner grease seals had been removed, but the zerk fittings were left in place and the grease passages were open to the inside of the motor. Consequently, the grease that had been frequently applied thereafter had very-nearly filled the interior of the motor. (The starting switch is external, so no sparks inside the motor housing to ignite the grease, TGFT.) The slimy mess was cleaned out and the stator and rotor baked dry, bearings replaced yet again, and the grease fittings finally removed. For the past 25+ years it has served me well, and runs much more smoothly and quietly than most newer grinders, and the wide tool rests make chisel grinding by hand a breeze. Yes, it has no eye shields--the operator wears safety glasses. It was originally painted black, but I had some left-over Delta gray and used it instead. It is VERY heavy and has the sort of classic look of the flared base similar to the '50's Delta 6" grinders. There was also one of these grinders in our school woodshop, painted pukey industrial-arts green of course.
