Yet another great auction find up in Amish Country on Memorial Day. The photo shows the saw as found at the Paradise Equipment Auction in Paradise (no, not the 'Heavenly Paradise' - this one is just east of Lancaster), Pennsylvania. Yes indeed-e-e, the day was hot and the joint was jumping! Several OWWM regulars and plenty of others were there - including some self-described 'expert' who was proclaiming that "the transmission was shot" on this 1971 Delta Wood & Metal band saw. But Noel Dempsey disagreed: "It's a good saw, just spray it (the frozen gear engaging mechanism) with some penetrating oil, let it sit, then tap it (the knurled knob) carefully with a hammer." I took a chance and it turns out that he was right!! After winning the bid, partially dis-assembling the saw (and experiencing 'the joy' of shoe-horning it into my car), I brought it over to Brian Graham's shop the next evening. Turns out that a little Kroil and some 'gentle persuasion' with a ball pien hammer did the trick - the gears weren't ruined, just stuck from sitting idle too long. Since the rest of the saw is in great shape, we can now go confidently ahead with its restoration. My thanks again to Noel Dempsey, for the great advice . . . and how was your Memorial Day Monday?
