Brown & Sharpe, No. 2 Universal Milling Machine, 3 HP, 3 phase with Bridgeport ‘J’ Head adapted to over-arms. I found this machine being used as an anvil in an old machine shop in South San Francisco; the knee was filled with water soluble oil which had separated and thru electrolysis had cut through two of the main drive gears. I had the table and saddle reground and ways reflaked. I was told the drive gear system including the drive for the dividing head was designed by a woman; goes to show what’s possible when war plays in the mix. This machine has rapid traverse in all three directions and speed can be changed on the fly.
This machine was originally used at the San Francisco Naval ship yard during WWII and has a plaque with the inscription ‘This Machine Conforms To Orders Of The War Production Board As To Finish Of Paint Surfaces’. I’m sorry to say this machine’s finish no longer conforms to those orders!
After the restoration of this machine I have a new appreciation for the machine design talents back in the day when there were only drafting boards and slide rules… and our naval fleet had almost been totally destroyed.
