The Silver Mfg Co. – No.21 Post Drill
Appears to be in very good condition apart from the coupler (between feed screw and spindle). The original pillar, foot, fork and table have been replaced by fabricated steel items. Also missing is the wooden feed-wheel handle.
I bought this post drill in April (2015), and took delivery yesterday (9th May 2015). I don’t need another one, but I have a soft spot for Silver post drills.
Drills to the centre of a 12” circle. 2-speeds – 2nd speed requires cranking in reverse. Run of feed = 3"; dia. of spindle = 1"; feedwheel is 6" dia. and has 67 notches; dia. of flywheel = 10½"; flywheel shaft gear has 22 teeth; main crank gear has 46 teeth; spindle gear has 30 teeth.
I don’t expect to do anything to this post drill for some months (years?). I want to strip it down and compare the components with my No.1 (a No.21 clone) – so it was bought strictly for research purposes you understand (try that on your missus…). But I have too many drills in parts at present and need to get some of the others reassembled first.

Detail of the coupler. There's something not right with the coupler - I suspect a repair is required. The actual coupler housing, 2 x ball races, and 8 x 3/16" ball bearings are in storage.

That's quite a cute little flywheel. At 10 1/2" diameter it's dwarfed by the almost 18" flywheel off my Silver No.14.
