This particular band saw was used in the tobacco industry in what was referred to as the "cooper shop". its purpose was to re-saw lumber making staves for the sides of the hogshead (barrels) which were packed with tobacco for storage and ageing and weighed 800 to 1000 pounds. they remained in storage for up to four years.
