Purchased in Boise, Idaho; previously used in furniture refinishing shop, but early history unknown. There's a fragmentary Duro decal on the front of the headstock. It appears that Duro was making this model between 1933 (or before?) and 1941; they were also branded Powr-Kraft for sale by Montgomery Ward; a similar or identical mode was sold by Power King in the 1930s. The most unique (as well as weakest) feature, of this model was the use of a clutch (rubber cone that engaged with concave spindle pulley). It was advertised as having great advantage in enabling user to start/stop lathe without having to turn the motor off, and advantage that I suspect became less relevant as motors were improved (e.g. capacitor start?) during the 1930s.
The original clutch lever & throw-out bearing have been removed, and clutch secured in place in the pulley with set screws and crimping of the pulley sleeve against the rubber. I assume the clutch was beginning to slip; this solution looks rather crude but seems to have been effective. The indexing stop was also removed (part of clutch lever casting?) The bearings have been replaced with modern Japanese repalcements, although I'm not sure how long ago that was done. (Outboard bearing = KSK 6204RS)
The tail stock body (cast iron) has been repaired (brazed), but appears to be in good working order, and has original 5" diameter cast iron hand wheel. Includes an original banjo and tool support with hand wheel, as well as a compound rest/cross slide (no hand wheel). The original spindle threads are 1"-16 TPI and are in good shape; there's an outboard sleeve with the same threads, held in place on unthreaded spindle shaft with a set screw. Purchase included a 6" (?) Duro faceplate cross-threaded for both inboard and outboard use, and 2 after market adapters to fit 1-1/2"-8 TPI chuck, etc. Bonus was an unrelated 6" faceplate, 1"-8 TPI. Lathe is mounted on a sturdy shop-made wooden stand. Motor and motor pulley are new.
Plans: clean up; replace motor with variable speed VFD; get chuck/adapters that will work with
