So often we get caught in the mystique of the machinery itself, and forget the skilled craftsmen who built these machines by hand, often in less than ideal working conditions. This is a picture that a local gentleman brought to us. The man with the "x" was his relative and the only name we know in this picture. The man's name is A.P. Welteroth. There is some writing on the back of this picture, but I find it to be somewhat inaccurate. It does say "Rowley & Hermance Mfg. Co. Basin Str. 1910 Williamsport, Penna Started 8-1909". We understand that Rowley and Hermance was sold by AD Hermance, after Rowley's passing, to the American Wood Working Machinery Co. In 1902 Hermance purchased the building it currently occupies from a well known local machinist who was manufacturing parts for him. I do believe that this picture was taken in front of the Rowley & Hermance Mfg Co. located on Basin St. in Williamsport. The building later turned into a textile mill and today has been fantastically restored into Bootleg BBQ. I estimate this picture was from the 1880's prior to Rowley's passing.
