Photos provided by correspondent John Mason. Second picture shows the text on the upper support rail: "W.R.FOX, GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. PAT. JUNE 17, 1879".

EDIT: Universal trimmer expert Jeff McVey provided more information on this trimmer model: "Fox may well have obtained a trimmer patent in 1879, but it was for a completely different (and pretty much useless) machine. He didn't actually start manufacturing trimmers until at least 1885. Judging from the "Number Sold" info contained in the Grand Rapids City Directories, the one in your pictures (S/N 1644) would have been made around 1888 or 1889. The patent on the one in your pictures (#393,970)was applied for on 12/11/1886, and issued on 12/04/1888."
