This joiner was given to me by Jeff (jtgr), whose woodworking club received it as a donation. They were understandably concerned about running the two knife clamshell head. Thanks to Bill Nance, Neal Draper, Ja'nette and her friend Bob, I received the jointer and was happy to find it originally bore the purple-blue Porter Cable used on a number of early stationary machines. However, I didn't feel comfortable running a clamshell head. Recently Bob Vaughan tipped me off to the fact that a Powermatic planer cutterhead would make an excellent donor with some lathe work. I believe this jointer to be an earlier version of the "heavy duty" long bed model, due to the replaceable lips that appear to be particular to the better jointers.
After quite a bit of machining, some weighing and balancing and knife sharpening, The Hutchinson is back together. I don't know if this jointer was sold while the company was partnered with my beloved Porter Cable; the table cranks and fence clamping mechanism are both more primitive, and the P.C. catalogs show a longer bed jointer with a three knife gibbed head. But I'm willing to pretend. I have hopes of finding a Hutchinson table saw to mount it to someday to have a combo machine with good slab wood milling properties. I kept the long arbor because this old girl was meant to be a flat belt machine.
