Champion Blower & Forge – No.101 (my 1st CB&F No.101).
I bought this post drill in Feb 2014, and picked it up in October. The seller lived in Waimate, Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand.
This was a right dogs breakfast, with a strange pulley in place of the flywheel, and the flywheel mounted above the feedwheel. I bought it for the handful of genuine blacksmiths (S&D) bits that came with it. As it turns out, it's more or less complete and undamaged (in spite of the modifications), except for the auto-feed lever, and crank arm. As luck would have it, a friend had just acquired two Champion Blower & Forge No.93 1/2 post drills (to make one complete drill) and both have their auto-feed levers - which look to be identical to the No.101 lever. So I now have almost all the parts necessary to complete this drill.
Single-speed. The column is 1 5/16” diameter and solid. The flywheel is 12“ diameter.
Run of feed = 3 3/16"; dia. of spindle = 7/8"; crank gear has 46 teeth; spindle gear has 24 teeth; flywheel shaft gear has 20 teeth. Drills to the centre of a 12” circle.
28th August, 2016. I've re-assembed the drill. There is a well-made braised repair to the yoke bracket supporting the table, and a repair is in order for the self auto-feed arm (it's been broken and repaired with a pin).
I've surfed the net and found pictures of these on their original backing boards. With some scaling I've reproduced what I think is a very close replica of the original. I even managed to source some square head nuts to fix the drill to the backing board.
I would have liked to find the time to finish this a little better, but I have too many post drills and too little time, so this one's now on the market.
