This lathe was purchased by the A C Colby Machinery co., located in New York city on 9/02/1936. I purchased the Lathe from a small electric motor shop in New Hyde Park New York, in December of 2014.
The Lathe needed a lot of work. I spent approximately 6 weeks on the restoration. I replaced the original leather flat belt with an automotive serpentine belt and the
counter-shaft pulley-to-motor "V" belt with a cog type V belt. A new Baldor 1/2HP reversible motor was installed. There was quite a bit of backlash in the cross slide and compound
screws so I cut down the shoulders of both these screws until I measured no backlash. The Forward-Reverse drum switch had arced over through the case. I brazed the hole that
was a result of this and rebuilt the switch. I replace all the original oil wicks, upgraded the original thrust washer to a thrust bearing, and added a few "Gits" oil caps to
key oil ports. I spent a lot of time in detail cleaning, painting, and polishing. I purchased the Lathe with it mounted on a solid wood board. After cleaning the grease and oil from the wood I realized it had the lettering "Step Down" and was actually a solid wood door which was obviously also very old! I knew I needed to preserve the history of this as well. The door was fitted to use as the new bench top.
