Modern 2LU Universal horizontal milling machine (table swings 45 degrees both ways)
Manufactured by Modern Tool Works, Toronto, Canada
Was purchased from machine shop of Gov. of Canada in Hull, QC in 1991 and then sold again in 2015.
Weighs 4000 lbs as per manual
3 HP 575 V 3 phase motor (appears original) changed to 240 V single phase 3 HP. Four A-51 vee-belts from motor to main driving pulley turning at 900 rpm
Coolant pump in base, 8-gallon cap.
4 Imperial gallons of SAE 20 (ISO 68) oil used throughout machine for lubrication.
NMTB 40 spindle on both horizontal and vertical spindles.
10 1/2" by 48" table, 28" traverse
12 spindle speeds 30-1000 rpm for horizontal spindle
Speeds doubled for vertical head attachment (60-2000 rpm)
12 Auto feeds on traverse, cross (1/2" - 25"/min) and knee (1/4" - 12 1/2"/min). No rapid feeds on this machine but rapid traverse offered as an option through a separate unit that bolts to the side of the knee and with a separate motor.
Universal head attachment with oil bath for internal gears. Head pivots in two axes.
3 horizontal arbor supports: 1 style A, 2 style B with one bolting to the original vertical brace from the knee to the front of support. Pilot on style A arbor must be 2-1/4" long. Max style B arbor size is 1-1/4" by 24" e.g. 41-1/4B24-3 with 1-7/8" bushings.
10" swing Modern dividing head (40:1 ratio), with 3 plates, a rest, a footstock and a 6" 3-jaw chuck.
12 gears with gear box for indexed spiral/helical milling (0.670" to 149" lead)
